chief, and that right there is sort of an edge to mitt romney. that's why you hear the obama campaign saying we think that he has sort of that natural advantage going into all of this. but i really don't think you're going to see mitt romney get testy the way he did during those gop debates in part because, you know, there was so much pressure on each of these individual candidates during those debates to have breakout moments because they were sharing the stage with seven or eight other guys. this is going to be -- and michele bachmann, this is going to be like an extended conversation on domestic issues, they'll be going through six different topics with jim lehrer. jim lehrer is such a mild mannered guy, that i think he'll try to keep the tone of the debate civil. i think that will also -- i think that will also affect what we see and hear tonight. >> we shall see. jim acosta, jim, thanks for me there in denver. and we showed you mitt romney, that clip and that pretty contentious debate from late last year. for the president, though, you have to reach back to 2008 to get a hint of

obama and romney are neck and neck. virginia romney has narrowed the lead from 5 to 2. another statistical tie. in ohio the president has improved his standing. he leads romney there by eight points. and for those wondering about the party idea the sample is less democratic in ohio this time than the last poll. digging deeper into our numbers we divided thet battleground states by three measures. president's job rating. romney's favorability rating that number is still under water he has problems and the question of which candidate is better equipped to manage the economy. remember the unemployment rate is 5.9% in virginia. romney's favorable in florida but under in virginia and ohio. when it comes to who is better able to manage the economy a question on which romney has staked his candidacy romney has a margin of error lead in florida and virginia. the president leads on that question in ohio. with iowa, new hampshire and ohio headed to the obama column that puts the president at 265 and that means romney has to run the table on the remaining states to get to 270. if the deba

. and on the eve of obama, romney, round one. which candidates can claim the highest television rattings and which vp candidate gets honorable mention? i'm ken bastida. >> and i'm dana king. there has been a huge spike in the gas pump and it happened overnight. kit doe on the reasons why gas stations are pushing a 10 to 30- cent jump. fill her up, kit. >> reporter: dana, in a simple supply, demand economics. a number of refineries shut down for a various number of reasons. one of which is the heat. >> the record heat that has been sweeping was apparently too much for the power grid in southern california. the exxon mobile refinery shut down yesterday after the facility lost power. gasbuddy.com says the heat caused a transformer at a nearby substation to malfunction. combine that with the refinery in richmond, and you have yet another perfect storm for high gas prices. the wholesale cost shot up $1.06 in one week. by friday, retail prices could spike 30 cents. if it keeps up, station owners will have to sell it at $4.75 a gallon to break even. 12 miles to the gallon in the city.

obama and mitt romney have jabbed at each other from afar for weeks, but now they get to do it face to face as they get set tonight for their first debate. slipping growth hits home in china's resilient services sector. >>> and more signs of trouble for the spanish government as the latest figures show its corporate tax revenue has tumbled. mariano rajoy issues the latest denial that he's ready for a bailout. >>> we now have the latest numbers crossing for the eurozone services pmi. the september final services read coming in at 46.1. an improvement that we have seen from the 46 number. this is still the lowest level we're seeing since 2009. the forward indication 49.4. in terms of what we're seeing on the final comp sit pmi, this is above the 45.9 read that we have, but just a fraction below what we saw in august, the rate was 46.3 then. this is the lowest read since may 2009. in terms of new business number for the composite september rate, 43.8. we're still right back at some of these 2009 lows. >>> elsewhere, the numbers are not that much better. lisa has more on these numbers out
